Whisper of Warning

Hello, and welcome back! We're getting a very early taste of summer here, and I'm really not enjoying it. It's over 90 degrees in the shade here at suppertime, and we're not even out of April yet. Wonder if I could change the words to 'Rain, Rain, Go Away' to refer to summer and have it work?

To finish our April reviews, I have the latest from Laura Griffin this time out: Whisper of Warning (Pocket Star). Remember Fiona Glass from Thread of Fear? Her sister Courtney is back, and this time, someone is trying to kill her. Courtney meets, reluctantly with her slimy ex, a very married man, and someone kills him and tries to murder her as well. Will Hodges is the newest homicide detective on the Austin police force, and he gets the investigation of the murder with his partner. Clearly, Courtney is hiding something from him, but he doesn't think she's a killer. Then more murders occur, and he's certain of it. Courtney has been on the wagon as far as men go, but for Will, she might make an exception. If only he'd trust her. But that's a little bit much to ask, and she knows to stay alive, she'll have to betray his trust. That doesn't stop her from getting emotionally attached to the quiet, sexy ex-military man who's the only thing standing between her and a jail cell--if his superior officer has his way. Courtney is smart, though she has her moments where you just want to say 'hey, use your brain!' Will is a fantastic hero, broody and intelligent, and not about to put up with any crap from Courtney, no matter how much he wants her. My biggest disappointment with this one is the very low level of sexual tension between this pair, and the way Griffin mostly glossed over the encounters Will and Courtney do have, unlike in her previous books. There are moments that will make you laugh in this one, and very tense, suspenseful moments that will have you on the edge of your seat. My hope is that Ms. Griffin isn't going to head into the straight suspense arena and leave her romance fans wishing for more. This one's earned three and a half of Cupid's five arrows. If the steam factor had been higher, I'd have scored it much higher.

Until next time, happy reading!
