Frustrated with PDF eBooks?

"I hate pdf files, and most ebook readers can't properly resize them to a non 8.5x11 screen. I also don't see a large scale seller of pdf-file based ebooks". . . .I read this comment on paidcontent last week but hear the same frustration alot. I used to say the same things until I seriously looked at the issue and found a website where I can 'resize' my PDF eBooks to the correct screen size for the eBook Reader I have.

Basically, PDF format is like a picture. With a picture you can only enlarge it by a certain % and not point size. The TXT and proprietary formats are text and so they can be sized to the point. The frustration comes because so many people publish PDF eBooks incorrectly for viewing on an eBook Reader.

My first experience with the frustrations of the PDF format was when I reviewed the jetBook. I could not display a single page without moving the page a minimum of 4 times. It drove me crazy! I found it difficult to enjoy reading a book in PDF format. This sent me on a journey. I wanted to understand how I should publish eBooks in PDF format.

I looked everywhere. Then while reading some forum posts on PDF frustrations I found an eBook webiste, manybooks.net, that 'reflowed' the PDF file so that the eBooks would fit perfectly on eBook Readers. You purchased a book in PDF format then chose 'Custom PDF' and a screen appeared for you to put the changes needed. This was great! That is as long as you knew what to put into the boxes!

For the jetBook here are your settings:

Dimensions: 70 mm x 90 mm
Body Font: Ariel
Heading Font: Times (no other choice)
Include headings: No
Font Size: 8 (for 20 pt) OR 10 (for 24 point)
Line Spacing: 1.25 Margins: 3 (all the way around)

Click on BUILD IT! This will produce a highly readable book that you do not have to scroll on each page to read.

It worked perfectly! I emailed myself the settings, so I would never forget. However, not all eBook dealers allow this PDF customization. Plus, for the eBooks you already have cannot be put through this process.

So. . .where does one go? I have no simple answer yet. In the meantime look for the 'Custom PDF' when you purchase your next eBook. Size it to the screen of your eBook Reader and you will find yourself enjoying reading again!

There is a link to the eBook website, manybook.net, that gives your the option of the 'Custom PDF' format.
