Australian native Peter Walsh is the former host of TLC’s Clean Sweep, and he is a regular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He is described as a “clutter expert and organizational consultant”. Walsh has a master’s degree with a specialty in educational psychology. This is his fourth book.
This book is subtitled “Clearing Mental Clutter to Become the Best You”. His premise is that the external clutter – the stuff which piles up in our houses, in our closets, our desks, our cars, our storage buildings, is the “tip of the iceberg” and the internal clutter is the real monster we need to slay.
Walsh helps us tackle the mental clutter in six major areas of our lives: Relationships, Work, Family, Money, Health and Our Sense of Well-Being. His psychology background really comes into play in these sections as he walks us through exercises, quizzes and scenarios to help us understand the clutter. Then, he helps us visualize or imagine the life we want and helps us make an action plan to get there.
I think Walsh does a great job of presenting us with some real truths -- many of them, ugly truths while helping us realize we can clean up these messes we’ve created.
Who really wants to realize that our clutter, our messes are based on our emotions? Or, worse, that we’ve created situations where that mental clutter is helping us to create lives we really do not want to live. How many people reading this are in a bad relationship because of fear of being alone, for instance? In bad jobs because of fear of failure? In bad health because we don’t want to hear bad news from the doctor?
However, this book is not all psychology and theory. You will find practical tips galore in this book, too. Some of my favorites include:
--the being nice part in the Relationships section. So many relationships are on the raggedy bus to Splitsville and just a few of these tips on how to treat each other could turn them around. This goes for all relationships—not just romantic ones!
--In the Work section, I’m working the “Quick Desk Purge” myself. I find work is one area people are most likely to trash-talk without ever doing anything about. You’ll find tips on improving your current job as well as finding your next, better job.
--The Family section could be a book (a short one) by itself, and you’ll find lots of tips on things like feeding picky eaters and dealing with “memory clutter”.
--In the Money section, Peter has plenty of frugal tips for vacations, dining out, buying stuff (clothes, furniture, and groceries) as well as some easy to understand financial advice.
--In the health section, Peter asks us to respect our bodies and show that respect by the food we eat, the supplements we take, the exercise we do, the clothes we wear.
--Lastly, the “Our Sense of Well-Being” section includes info about being balanced, centered and a part of your community. It’s about honoring your own spiritual side whether that’s through volunteering, singing, painting, praying, or whatever works for you.
Enough Already has a thorough index, which is really great for future reference. You might not have a financial paperwork problem or out-of-control email right now, but when you do; you can easily find ways to deal with them.
