Polish sweet main dishes

For many people (of various nationalities) the main dish should be spicy, salty, sour – but not sweet. It is the dessert that is designed to spoil our taste sensation with sugar and all the kinds of sweetness. But not in Poland... pasta, rice, crepes, dumplings, even traditional ‘pierogis’ – you can all prepare it in a sweet way. No, not for a dessert – but for the dish of the day. Italian visitors to Poland cannot believe that the Poles bring such disgrace to their beloved pasta or spaghetti. But is there really a reason to make a fuzz about? Sweet dinner does not mean unhealthy sweets. It can consist of fruit, dairy staff and other valuable ingredients.

Sweet dishes belong usually to the easiest ones. They might not look sophisticated (but of course they can) and they do not need a lot of time to get prepared. Sweet dishes are perfect for working mothers, fathers with poor cooking skills and bachelors. And most of the kids just love them! Below you will find some examples of Polish typical sweet dishes.

Rice with apples – boiled rice with grated apples, baked with sugar and cinnamon. The layers (of rice and apples) should be placed in the pot in turn. The rice can be replaced by pasta.

Rice with cream, cinnamon and sugar. I almost cannot imagine less complicated dish. One just needs to boil rice, pour thick cream on the top, sprinkle it with sugar and cinnamon.

Rice (alternatively pasta) with strawberry sauce is perfect in Summer. The sauce (that is simply thick milkshake) is made of strawberries, sugar and milk or cream.

Pasta (almost any kind of it) sprinkled with cottage cheese and sugar. If you heat it together (with butter) on the pan, it tastes even better!

Dumplings with butter, sugar and crumbs. The dumplings – ‘kopytka’ - are made of flour mixed with boiled potatoes. When added cottage cheese, they become softer and sweeter.

Dumplings (so called ‘pierogi’) filled with various kinds of fruit (among them strawberries or blueberries) or sweet cottage cheese. One may add some sugar and cream on the top.

Round dumplings (made of softer dough than traditional ‘pierogi’ – as ‘knedle’ dough consists also of potatoes) filled with fruit – such as strawberries or apples. Eaten with cream.

Crepes in a sweet way. One can fill them with sweet cottage cheese, jam or nut stuffing. They taste even better when fried on the pan again with the filling.

I hope that you will try out at least one of the presented above dishes. They are really easy and popular meals that you encounter during your stay in Poland. What is surprising, most of them taste even better when heated. Enjoy!
