It is Saturday in the fictional town of Greenfield. Boxcar children, Violet, Jessie, Benny and Henry are washing the family car. The hot job completed, tired brothers and sisters head to the ice cream parlor for a treat. Many surprises await them on their visit. A new guy, Mr. Brown, owns the ice cream parlor. The ice cream is not right. Bad ice cream? No way!

Boxcar children stumble across a rocky road mystery in the ice cream parlor. Someone is sabotaging Mr. Brown’s efforts to offer the Greenfield citizens quality desserts. The young sleuths decide to help the shop owner. They take shop jobs to be near and keep on the lookout for curious happenings. Will the boxcar children’s good intentions suffice? Will Greenfield ever have a tasty, cold chocolate sundae again or will the nasty, rocky road remain bumpy?

In The Chocolate Sundae Mystery, the Alden children find a mystery in their own backyard. They and Grandfather Alden travel so often and uncover mysteries far away from home in many books. It is refreshing to see the children at home. Although, the grandfather is rich, the children wash the family car. They are willing to help Mr. Brown, a neighbor, solve his problem.
