Wedding Etiquette - Number of Bridesmaids and Groomsmen

Victoria,

I was going to ask my sister to be a bridesmaid but she will be eight months pregnant on our wedding day. Now we have an uneven number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Do we have to have an even number?

Marcella

Hi Marcella,

You are supposed to ask people that are important to you to be your wedding attendants. If you have five bridesmaids and six groomsmen, there is no need to make another friend a bridesmaid if you aren’t close (in which case, she wouldn't have been asked to be a bridesmaid before).

If there is an extra bridesmaid, a groomsman escorts a bridesmaid on each arm. If there are more groomsmen than bridesmaid the extra man walks alone or if there are two, they walk next to each other down the aisle.

Happy planning!

Thanks for writing,
Victoria
