Lucan

Hello, and welcome back! It looks pretty ugly out today, but at least itís cooler than yesterday and the day before. Iím actually hoping for a little rain, and maybe itíll cool off even more. Plus the rain makes for a nice evening of reading. I might even fire up the tea kettle. The bread machine is already working, though itís still a bit warm for soup today. Maybe next week itíll be cooler again and we can test out another new soup recipe.

This time out I have Lucan (Grand Central) by Susan Kearney. Cael is the high priestess and healer on her planet, fated to be unmated forever. Lucan Rourke has arrived on her world from Earth in search of the Holy Grail, not to meet women, but he canít stop his attraction to the forbidden Cael from their very first encounter. He needs the Grail to cure an epidemic of infertility back on Earth that will wipe out
the population in just a few short years. Caelís world, too, needs the Grailís healing power, but neither knows exactly where it is. They just have a few clues to work with, and working together to find it puts the pair into very close quarters, much too close for Cael to be able to avoid the consequences of their attraction. And way too close for her to keep her fantastic abilities a secret from Lucan for very long. Fantasy fans and King Arthur fans looking for a new twist on their favorite myths will probably enjoy this, and it is the beginning of a new series. Iím not a huge fan of futuristic stories, so this one didnít really do much for me. And, as much as I like my mythology, King Arthur has never been one of my favorites. If youíre looking for a shapeshifter story, this one might grab you, as thereís a little bit of a twist there as well. Lucanís quest is a selfless one, which makes him a really good hero, and Caelís duty requires her to be as selfless in other ways. I know there are readers who will love this one and eagerly look forward to the next one in a few months. But Iím afraid I didnít find it a keeper, itís just not for me. Iím borrowing only three of Cupidís five arrows for it.

Until next time, happy reading!
