Disney Pixie Hollow and Flash

Disney's Tinker Bell is one of my childhood memories. Of course, back then we had to use our imagination a little more than our children do today. Peter Pan and Tinker Bell were originally characters in a novel written by J.M. Barrie near the turn of the century. Most of my generation were introduced to Peter Pan and Tinker Bell in the 1950's as a television version of a stage play and from Walt Disney's 1953 animated file. Disney has reinvented Peter Pan and Tinker Bell many times over the years until we reach today's version.

What does that have to do with FlashR. As most things on the Disney website, Tinker Bell and her friends at Pixie Hollow are Flash based web applications. Once you log in, you can do many things at Pixie Hollow including creating your very own version of a Tinker Bell fairy.

The first thing you see is a short Flash intro with music and a voice over welcoming you to Pixie Hollow. The music continues as you play the "game" and create your own fairy. If I had to make one suggestion, it would be to have the music loop a little longer. It is very short and does get tiring after the first few minutes.

You use slider and button controls to set the size of your fairy, the skin and eye color, the hair color and style and, finally, the wing style. When you're finished, your fairy appears in Pixie Hollow. The next step is where you choose a talent for your fairy. Flash mouse over events display a description for each talent choice, Light, Water, Tinker, Garden and Animal. After you choose a talent, you choose a first, middle and last name via buttons and sound effects on mouse click events.

The fairy herself is a vector image with simple animations that make her float slightly up and down and move her body just a little. They didn't bother to make her hair or dress move but she does blink.

You can print your fairy on your own printer or move on to take a tour of Pixie Hollow. This is a series of scenes with small fairies floating up and down. The music finally changes and instead of a voice over, you have several text balloons that pop up as the fairies talk to you. At the end of the tour, you have the option to chat with the fairies via an online chat. Your fairy is saved to your account and you can create others. Each time you log into Pixie Hollow, your fairy is there to great you.
