The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, No. 1) (Boxcar Children Mysteries) by Gertrude Chandler Warner is an endearing classic children’s book.
This is BOOK ONE of a wonderful series that was enjoyed by one of my girls. She read the whole series curled up in a big chair in the family room. In this first book we meet the four siblings; Henry, Jessie, Violet and baby, Benny.
Sadly, their parents have died. They remember hearing that their Grandfather, who is now expected to be their guardian, was mean to their mother- so they don’t want any contact with him. On their own, the brothers and sisters decide on a plan to take care of themselves and have nothing to do with this relative.
Through some planning they are able to avoid and escape from their Grandfather. In this book they are first at a bakery and later in the woods. While in the woods they find a boxcar which becomes their home.
At the local dump they find some dishes, cups and silverware. As the oldest, Henry feels the most responsible and becomes a handyman for Dr. Moore.
You will enjoy these books by best-selling American author, Gertrude Chandler Warner who weaves a story of suspense which draws young readers- and they want to solve the mystery.
Ms. Warner spins an enchanting story for young and tween readers. The story is captivating and readers want to start the next book almost immediately upon finishing this first edition. The books will get a welcome spot on your bookshelf - after they have all been piled up around your child while they are being read as they provide a treasure box of escapades and mysteries just begging to be solved.
Introduce the The Boxcar Mystery series to your child. They are super chapter books. Let them visit the world inhabited by Benny, Violet, Jessie and Henry. My children loved the series. They are great for family reading aloud as children can relate to the sibling adventures.
