|Artfire has revamped their category landing pages with a new look and a new category scheme. There are now six main categories; Handmade, Design, Supplies, Media, Vintage and Fine Art. Where does digital art fall within this new category scheme?|
Within the Design category, there is a Digital Art subcategory which is divided further into Altered Images, Cards, Tags and Other. We all know how popular altered art and tags are for scrapbooking and paper crafts. This area has many listings and ArtFire even has it's own ACEO Artists Guild.
The Supplies category is where you will find everything you might need for your art, crafts and business. Although there isn't a Digital Art subcategory, there are several subcategories where you could list your digital art. The most popular is the Business category. All handmade artisans need business cards, labels, newsletters and more. Digital artists have two options when selling business graphics. One is to sell the graphic files and send them to the customer via email. That's what most of us think of first. But, you also have the option to print the business cards yourself or have them printed at a place like FedEx Kinkos. In this case, you would send the physical product, the printed cards, to the customer. For those artists concerned that their graphic files will be passed around or copied, this is an option.
Another big category is Media with several subcategories for digital art including Animation, E-Books, Graphics, Media, Services, Software and Web Elements. Although the Animation category is a bit empty, for now, you could be one of the first to list your FlashR animation and ecards. The most popular place for digital art is the Graphics subcategory. This is where your customers will look when shopping for web graphics for their blog, online store or website. You can also list your graphic-related services from general website and business design to specific graphics including clip art and templates. Specifically under Media – Services, you will find listings for advertising and business branding services. Under Web Elements you will find listings for Ajax, Flash Elements, Games, Widgets and Website Templates. You can find other digital artist hanging out at the ArtFire Web Designers & Digital Artist Guild.
I have to admit I was disappointed that there wasn't a subcategory for Digital Art under the Fine Art category. But you will find Digital Art listed under a few of the Fine Art subcategories including ACEO, Collage, Drawing, Illustration, Mixed Media, Photography, Print and Reproduction. As you would expect ACEO is a popular area with many listings but Illustration, Photography and Print are also popular areas. ArtFire has a Visual Arts Guild where you can find ideas and help getting started on ArtFire.
