Bettany, best known as co-starring in MY BEAUTIFUL MIND or MASTER AND COMMANDER alongside Russell Crowe, plays the archangel Michael. He voluntarily comes down to Earth to protect a pregnant woman (Palicki) who may be the key to saving humanity after God becomes disgusted and decides to unleash another apocalypse akin to the Biblical flood. This time it's fallen angels who are being allowed to overrun and destroy the humans.
If you watch the trailer, included below, you can see that after Bettany's angel character falls to Earth, he cuts off his own wings. And that he's got some sort of tattooing just about all over him. It's on his neck, chest and arms. Movie posters show more tattoos on his lower torso, and it appears they extend down below the waistband of his pants. In an interview, Bettany revealed that the tattoos are composed of the angelic script translated and used by 16th century occultist John Dee. An astronomer, mathematician, alchemist and author who was an adviser to Queen Elizabeth I, Dee said that the celestial language (sometimes called Enochian) was taught to him by angels, along with a variety of magical practices.
