iCraft.ca Online Marketplace for Handmade Artists

The number of places to sell your digital art online continues to grow. One new online marketplace is iCraft.ca. This is a fairly new e-commerce site for the handmade artist based in Toronto, Canada. iCraft.ca opened its doors on November 2007 and had its grand opening on March 2008. In just that short time the number of artists, called Creators, selling on iCraft.ca has grown to over 1900.

The first thing that you will notice about iCraft is the clean and uncluttered storefront. On the site's main page, you will see a good-sized 600 x 400 px banner disguised as a beautiful store window. This store window rotates images of products sold in the marketplace. What is most important here is the professional, high-end first impression that this gives to the products being featured in the banner and to the marketplace entire. This is much more than just a rotation of seller's avatars or the basic product image.

Under this rotating banner are rows of thumbnail images for new and featured products in the store. These refresh to display new thumbnails periodically. Keeping that uncluttered look and professional impression, the name of the product, artist's name, product description and price appear in a pop-up box only when you mouse over the thumbnail. This pop-up info box also works as a link to the product listing.

Throughout the marketplace, you will see that iCraft.ca strives to keep a simple and non intrusive "footprint". The pages are clean and uncluttered with only a small iCraft top banner that does not draw your attention away from the artist's store banner and product listing.

The artist's Creator Exhibit page is the first page of your store. It displays your banner and avatar. Although the suggested banner size (625px x 225 px) is a bit smaller than allowed on other marketplaces, the avatar is a good size (230 x 230 px). Along with these graphics, you will have a welcome message and basic information including links to your personal/business website, blog, email and RSS. Under this information are the thumbnails for all of your products, including the name and price. Although you do not have that familiar category list of the type of products in your store, the thumbnail list can display all products or be sorted by category.

Suggested product image size is a minimum width of 500 px. Large sized image dimensions are 860 x 694 px which is a nice size for the zoom view. You are allowed up to 6 images for each product. Also on this product page is the basic information about the product and the seller's shipping, return and other policies. At the bottom are links to several other products by the same artist and several social bookmarketing links.
