You many not think of skiing when you think of Maine. Other things may come to mind, like lighthouses. Or lobster. Or moose!
But Maine offers spectacular skiing, usually from November to May. You'll find a ski area to suit nearly any taste, and most offer more than just downhill skiing. Tubing, sledding, snowboarding and even ice skating activities are available at various resorts.
Here's a sampling of some of Maine's ski areas:
Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley is one of North America's largest ski mountain. Boasting 133 ski trails, mountain side lodging and an alpine village are some of the
Camden Snow Bowl offers skiing, snowshoeing, tubing - and awesome views of the Atlantic Ocean! The ski area is also the home of the United States Toboggan Championships in February.
I've never been to Quoggy Jo Ski Area, but I just love the name. Located near Presque Isle, Quoggy Jo is a good place to learn skiing, with a special area for first-time skiers.
If you want to check out some of the ski area before you go, there are 34 different cams all on this site: Cams & Videos.
If you'd like to learn more about skiing, Maine has a museum devoted to "preserving and publicizing the business of skiing in Maine, while celebrating Maine's history and heritage". The museum is located in Kingsfield.
