Your home may not be the healthy air oasis you need as an allergy, asthma or sinus sufferer. Many of us spend 90 percent of our time indoors where the air can be as much as 100 times more polluted than outdoor air, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
I took that statistic to heart and decided to transform my unhealthy home into a healthy one this winter by purchasing a device, called the Sinus Survival Air Vitalizer. I must admit I was somewhat dubious that this device would work when it first arrived in the mail. Its design, shape and small size (about 5 by 8 inches) made it unlike any air-cleaning device Iíd ever seen.
Iíve been using this device all winter and how it works is still something of a mystery to me but it will clean the air in a room about 150-200 square feet. I keep it in my bedroom on a nightstand but it also can be used in a living room or taken to the office.
The Air Vitalizer is a negative ion generator and air purifier. It basically uses the principal that negative and positive tend to attract each other. Negative ions are air molecules with extra electrons looking for positive ions.
The Air Vitalizer emits three trillion negatively-charged ions per second whose job it is to attract positively-charged particles. Air pollutants, such as dust, pollen, animal dander and mold, have positive charges which attach to the ions. One pollen grain has 50 or more positive ions.
Once the pollutants bond with the negative ions they become heavier and drop from the air onto the floor or table top. Basically, these allergens are no longer in your breathing space and can easily be removed by vacuuming.
In laboratory testing, the Air Vitalizer has been found to be as efficient at cleaning indoor air as HEPA filters, considered to be the best air cleaners. However, HEPA and other air cleaners/purifiers actually remove negative ions as they clean the air.
The Air Vitalizer seems to have helped lessen my stuffiness and congestion this winter but my husband still complains that I occasionally breathe loudly through my mouth when sleeping on my back. The device doesnít disturb your sleep as it is noiseless.
The Air Vitalizer costs about $150. Itís lightweight and easily portable from home to office or can be taken along on trips. It can be used in conjunction with humidifiers, HEPA air cleaners and electrostatic air cleaners. Minimal maintenance is required.
