Watercolor Brush in Photoshop CS4 - Digital Art and Design

In this tutorial, we will learn how to color a line art logo. We have already drawn the candle logo’s line art in Livebrush and we will now use the Brush tool in Photoshop CS4 to add a “watercolor wash” to the logo.

Open your LiveBrush png line art file into Photoshop CS4. You will notice that the line art is on a transparent layer.
Add a new layer under this transparent layer in the Layers panel. Name it “Watercolor”.
Add another layer under the Watercolor layer and name it “Background”.
Set the Foreground Color box to white. With the Paint Bucket tool, fill the Background layer with color. This background layer is optional. We have added the layer to help us see better as we paint. We will turn off the visibility of this layer after we are finished.
Click on the Brush tool and set the brush tip to No. 63 Watercolor Loaded Wet Flat Tip in the Brush Preset Picker in the Options Bar.
Decide on the color for your candle and set the color in the Foreground Color box. For the example, I used a light purple #caafde. Paint the candle in a loose style. Don’t try to stay inside the lines.
Change the Foreground Color box to a yellow color for the flame. I used #f0e565. You will need to reduce the size of the brush in the Options Bar. Again, don’t stay within the lines as you paint the candle’s flame.
Finally, we will add a little orange to the flame. Set the Foreground Color box to #f9b208 and add this darker color at the bottom of the flame.
To make the color look even more like a thin watercololr wash, we will reduce the Opacity of the Watercolor layer. Select this layer and use the slider control to set the Opacity of the Watercolor layer to about 65.
Turn off the visibility of the Background layer. This will give you the option to use your logo on any type of background. Save your file.
