Finishing Your Handkerchief Hem Skirt

After you cut out the circle, unfold the fabric and carefully (to prevent excess stretching of the cut edges) test the skirt to be sure it will go on with sufficient ease. Once you have confirmed the fit, you can finish the waist by either adding a separate band or folding the edges over to make a casing for elastic depending on the waistband style that you prefer. Cut the length as desired and hem.

Once you have mastered the basic concept, there are many different ways to put these skirts together. Try layering several layers of transparent fabrics or overlapping squares/rectangles of different sizes. You can also create interesting effects by moving the waist opening circle off-center to create an asymmetric look.
