Rock Band iPhone

If you're a fan of the Rock Band series of games, be sure to check out the Rock Band iPhone app! This fun game lets you enjoy the music playing madness of Rock Band while you're waiting in line for a sub!

As you might expect on an iPhone, there's no singing aspect to the game - you are focusing solely on using your thumbs to play guitar, base or drums. The free version of the app gives you access to just one song - "Learn to Fly" - which happens to be a song we really enjoy. Gameplay is obvious and simple. The colored bars stream past, you hit the matching pads at the right time, and you play along.

Most of the screen is (properly) focused on this stream of notes and your pads. The pads are just the right size, and even change in shape from a guitar pick to a drum pad based on what you are playing. There's a tiny area at the very top of the screen where they show "band member" types of graphics - someone playing, the whole band on stage, but really, nobody has time to look at those things. You are concentrating on the stream of notes and hitting your cues.

The sound is, of course, great. If you upgrade to the full game there are all sorts of songs you can play and enjoy. They have a good mix in there with songs that are from the 70s to modern songs. Apparently they'll let you add songs in one at a time too, which is great. I love games that let me customize exactly what songs I want to play with. I am very willing to pay for that aspect.

You could complain that they don't let you sing - but heck, it would be really odd to be singing into your iPhone. There are plenty of other console based games which let you do the singing. I am very happy with this Rock Band app focusing on the instruments you can play with your fingers.

I was hugely addicted to Tap Tap which is a rhythm game, fairly similar to this, so I am very pleased to see Rock Band come into the app world. I warmly recommend this to all Rock Band fans who have an iPhone or iTouch. It is certainly a lot of fun!
