Introducing Yoga to Kids

Introducing kids to yoga is easy with this fun to read book, "It's a Beautiful Day for Yoga." The publisher sent me a copy of this gorgeous hardbound book for review. As soon as I opened the package my 15 month old wanted to see it. When I opened the pages to show her the soft, chalk illustrations, she was enthralled. While she is too young to understand all of the poses, she thought it was great fun to see the little family in the book hanging upside down and stretching in all directions.

This is the first book in a new series called "With My Child." The illustrations are simple, yet very clear in showing each yoga pose as the rhymes on each page walk you and your child through the simple yoga routine. Since these poses are meant for kids, there is nothing here that is too complicated for adults. You can demonstrate the poses for your child and help them learn how to do simple yoga stretches.

Yoga is a great way to work out the kinks in your muscles, improve balance, enhance breathing, and strengthen and stretch muscles in a very low-impact way. Kids today are under a tremendous amount of stress, and teaching them yoga is a perfect way to help them learn to relax and shed some of that stress. Since yoga encourages movement, it is also a nice counter to the couch potato trend that is threatening the health of our nation's children.

Yoga can be performed indoors and in a small amount of space - and one reason so many children are out of shape is that they do not have safe yards to play in or they are in school or daycare until nearly dinnertime each day.

The author, Emily A. Filmore, offers suggestions for how to use the book in the foreword as well as descriptions and benefits for each pose in the back of the book. This is a great gift item as well and would be a cherished part of any small child's book collection. I would suggest this book for children from about 2-8 years old.
