Valentine Sweetheart Draw

We finally were able to carry out this Special Valentine Sweetheart Draw Mini Tournament since the weather turned sunny and much warmer. We had three foursomes sign up with one player having to drop out the night before. We were able to keep most of those who signed up to carry over into the next week and we did play golf.

My partner Janet Gravette had trips planned this week so she was unable to be here so we carried on anyway. She hated to miss it since we had been working on this for some time. We had decided to plan a mini tournament once a month using a different theme in our hope that we could get more members interested in coming to our Ladies Day Events. We have a small membership so wanted to try something different.

Evidently this is going to work as those who participated had a great time and enjoyed our sack lunch after play. We intended to make these lunches small trying to do something different each time. As we thought variety is what will keep them coming out each Wednesday.

The Valentine mini tournament was a draw for partners after play and this would be their sweetheart partner. I asked each player to take her score minus handicap and combine it with her partner minus handicaps adding together for a total number to find the winners. The names of all who played were put in a sack and each person drew out her partner. It ended up you could be on two different teams by the time everyone drew a name.

The golf game was fine as I had the Pro Shop slot us so we could all finish together but the last group ended up a half hour behind the rest. We have to speed up some of these players as we keep stressing that you have to stay not more than one hole behind the group ahead of you. This seems to be our biggest hang up with our players is keeping up with the group ahead.

The decorated valentine sack lunches were a big hit as we were waiting for the last group to arrive. I asked our gal Ruth in charge of the 19th hold lunch counter to set up a table with a mixture of chips, crackers and nuts along with ice tea. Janet had made decorated heart cookies and I made heart shaped sandwiches. Ruth stored the sandwiches in the cooler until ready to place them in the decorated sacks. Our plans for this year is to use Ruth more for these lunches as we have to support her and make this successful for her. Since most of us live right on the golf course it seems easier to just go home and prepare your lunch at home. It is important for our club to keep Ruth busy and profitable.

Since Janet could not attend I asked Sara Pettijohn to help with the scoring to find the winners. She did a great job of totaling the two sweetheart partnerís scores and we had two winners. First place winners with second place winners were announced and money awarded to each person. I also gave heart shaped note pads to the players who scored best on Mill #3 the Heart of Texas golf hole and three others who scored lowest on three of the Par three holes. Next month is St. Patrickís Day Lucky Seven Mini Tournament on March 17th 2010.
