Words are powerful. They are used every day and in every language and can have a great impact the moment they are read. Therefore, when choosing words in your decorating, consider the meaning or impact that you want them to have in your home.
Are you inspired by something humorous, serious, romantic or spiritual? Perhaps you’d prefer words that tell a story as in a poem or words that provide a suggestion like “Live Laugh Love.”
Take your time choosing your words and consider the following ideas to add them to your home:
Stencils are available in many sizes and fonts. Use them to paint words directly onto your wall or to stencil onto another surface that will then be hung on the wall. For example, stencil words onto thick poster board and then glue materials like fabric, glitter, magazine or book pages to the letters.
Trace words onto the wall using a projector or just draw them directly onto the wall. Fill in with metallic paints in gold or silver and outline each letter with paint pens to create a definitive border.
Apply Vinyl Letters
Because quotes are so popular in decorating, there are many retailers that specialize in creating inexpensive vinyl letters that stick to your wall. You can often choose your own quote, font and letter size or buy a quote pre-made. Such vinyl letters are typically easy to put on the wall and easy to remove.
Use Pre-Cut Letters
Decorate pre-cut wooden letters with interesting objects for texture and humor. For instance, spell out “Life’s a Beach” with letters covered in seashells or “My Family is Nuts” with peanut shells or acorns. Incorporate your interests using related objects like “golf” spelled out in golf balls or small racecar toys to spell out “NASCAR.” Take old mismatched pieces of flatware to spell out “Kiss the Cook” in your kitchen or spools of thread to spell out “Living a Sew-Sew Life” in your sewing room.
Movie & T.V. Inspiration
Look to movies and t.v. for whimsical ways to share your family name. For example, my last name is Coogan, so I could use “Coogan’s Bluff.” If your last name was Green, you could use “Green Acres.” Turn your name into a sign by painting pre-cut letters and gluing them to a board. Hang such fun family signs on your porch or in an interior room where others will see it.
Get out the Power Tools
If you are handy with a scroll saw cut letters from MDF in any size you need. Hang 30” letters that spell out “DREAM” as a dramatic headboard over a bed. Experiment with other materials like sheet metal or foam board.
Spell your child’s name or something that illustrates his interests like “Bookworm” or “Soccer Dude” onto his bedroom wall. In a nursery room, paint the words “Once upon a time” at ceiling height on the wall and end it with “and they lived happily ever after.” Or pick phrases from childhood stories and intersperse it with character drawings.
As you can see, decorating with words is an inexpensive and really fun way to add personality to your home. The words you choose can help set the mood of a room, just like any other decorating element in your home. They add flair and style and can be conversation starters, too. Overall, adding words to your interiors is a great way to enhance the uniqueness of your home decor.
