A contemporary artist, architect and environmentalist, Maya Lin has continued to possess a strong interest in the environment.
By studying the topography of living habitats (hills, mountains, bodies of water) she has interpreted landscapes into natural art. She studies computer renderings of the areas of interest and takes into account mathematical formulas. It all seems very scientific.
At the University of Michigan College of Engineering, Maya Lin designed an area of soil covered with grass. As high as six feet, the mounds are reminiscent of waves in motion. In a sense, this is nature imitating nature.
At Storm King, a sculpture park in the Hudson River Valley of New York, Maya Lin has designed a permanent sculpture, "Wavefield." Taking almost a year to construct, it covers eleven acres of land and utilizes discarded gravel from the New York State Thruway.
The earth sculptures at Storm King are as high as ten to fifteen feet and over three hundred feet long.
But is it land or water? She lets the viewer decide.
