Options for Selling Digital Art Online

If setting up the download process yourself is too confusing, a third option is to use PayPal along with a third party shopping cart that can handle digital downloads. PayPal has a list of partner sites you may wish to consider (see link below). These partner sites offer shopping cart software hosted on their servers that can take care of processing digital downloads. After the cart information is process and stored, the customer is sent on to PayPal for payment processing. Then the customer is returned to the third party website for the download process.

Of course, selling from your own site isn't your only option. There are several online marketplaces that allow digital artists to open a store. Some of the better known sites for small and startup businesses are ArtFire, Etsy, Icraft and other "handmade" marketplaces. These sites will not only give you the ability to get your artwork out there for all to see but also provide a shopping cart and a way to collect payments.

Depending on the marketplace, you have several options for payment processing including PayPal, Google Checkout, Amazon Payments and credit cards. Once you have opened a store on one of these marketplaces, the payment process is basically the same as selling from your own website with PayPal. What makes these sites so popular is the built-in store and shopping cart combination. Also, this is a nice place for the novice to start because the marketplace has tutorials explaining exactly how to set up a PayPal or other payment processing to work with their shopping cart. However, these marketplaces do not have a process for downloading digital products from their website. Therefore, your only option for delivery of your product is email.

If you want to sell on a marketplace and still be able to offer digital downloads, another option is to join a specialized marketplace that has an all-in-one shopping cart, payment processing and download feature. For example, there are many digital scrapbooking websites that sell digital downloads. The website administrators deal with all the details of running the online store, payment processing and instant downloads. Your sales are collected and a monthly payment is made to you. All the digital artists need to do is create their digital art and upload it to the store. Here are a few sites that you may wish to consider.
