After a dramatic, gut wrenching performance in the movie “Precious”, Mo'Nique won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award last night at the 82nd Oscar Awards.
Mo'Nique's portrayal of Mary Jones in the movie “Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire”, has garnered her a slew of awards over the past several months: On January 15th, she accepted the Best Supporting Actress award at the 15th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, January 17th, she receives a Golden Globe, January 21st she wins at the British Academy Awards, January 23rd she wins the Screen Actors Guild Award, February 26th she wins Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role at the NAACP Image Awards, and on March 6th, she wins at the 25th Spirit Awards.
Her performance in “Precious” has transformed Mo'Nique from stand-up comedian, to a bona-fide actress. But if you were to ask Mo'Nique, she would say that she is a stand-up comedian that won an Oscar.
Mo'Nique has always been a dynamic personality; champion the cause for the underdog, unapologetic about how she lives her life, and what she believes. In many of her acceptance speeches, Mo'Nique said that it was for every “Precious” in the world, and for every Mary Jones.
During an interview last evening after winning the coveted Oscar, Mo'Nique was asked if she could identify with Mary Jones. The actress/comedian stated that there is a point in all of us that we may reach an ugly place.
When it came time for the Best Supporting Actress Award, you could feel the anxiety, as though everyone was holding there breath. Mo'Nique had been the favorite to win. After her name was read, Mo'Nique turned and kissed her husband, Sidney Hicks, then her co-star Gabourey Sidibe and then walked to the stage where she received her Oscar, and gave a moving speech once again:
"First, I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics," she began. "I want to thank Ms. Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to; Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey because you touched it, the whole world saw it." She went on to thank "My entire BET family, my 'Precious' family, thank you so much. To my amazing husband, Sidney, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to fore go doing what's popular in order to do what's right and baby, you were so right. God bless us all!"
At a news conference after the Awards, Mo'Nique explained the significance of her wearing a blue gown, and the Gardenia in her hair. “I wore this blue dress, because Hattie McDaniel wore a blue dress. I wore this Gardenia in my hair, because Hattie McDaniel wore a Gardenia in her hair when she won her Oscar.”
Congratulations to Mo'Nique on her success, and to continued success.
