Spotlight Wisin Y Yandel

Reaggeton music is growing in popularity, thanks in part to the dynamic duo called Wisin Y Yandel. One of the top selling Latin artists, Wisin Y Yandel dominated the Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Airplay Charts in 2009, started their own record label, collaborated with some of the biggest names in urban music, earned multiple platinum albums and even a couple of Grammy Awards.

Juan Luis Morera (Wisin), and Llandel Veguilla (Yandel), are both natives of Puerto Rico and were born in 1978 and 1977 respectively. They recorded their first album together, "Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio," back in 2000 in their homeland Puerto Rico. Reggaeton, popular in the club scene, was gaining radio play and fans thanks to fellow artists such as Daddy Yankee and Don Omar. Wisin Y Yandel's subsequent albums garnered them there share of new fans, with their racy lyrics and smooth beats, and in 2004, they started their own record label, WY Records. 2005 brought their first number one Latin Album, "Pa'l Mundo," and several hit singles including dance hits “Rakata” and “Noche de Sexo.” In 2006 they released another hit album "Los Vaqueros" which went to #2 on the Latin Billboard charts and had the hit song “Pegao,” which made a splash on music television with it's sexy video.

The duo found greater success with 2007's "Wisin vs. Yandel: Los Extraterrestres," which won them their first Grammy for Best Urban Music Album. The album contains collaborations with Reggaeton artists such as Don Omar, as well as English singers like Eve.It also sold over a million copies, and had several hit singles, the most famous being "Sexy Movimiento" which was remixed with US pop star Nelly Furtado as well as Reggeaton star Daddy Yankee, and was even included in the video game “Grand Theft Auto IV. In 2008, single “Me Estas Tentando” hit #1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs in the United States.

But, if any year belonged to Wisin Y Yandel it was 2009. 2009 brought the release of "La Revolución," their best-selling album to date. The album won them several awards including a US Grammy, a Premio MTV Latinoamérica, 2 Latin American Grammies, and nominations for an American Music Award for Favorite Latin Music Artist and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop Video for “Abusadora” The album spawned several hit singles in addition to “Abusadora,” including "Mujeres in the Club" featuring rapper 50 Cent and “Gracias a Ti.” It also helped skyrocket sales for their world-wide “La Revolucion” tour, which routinely sold out tickets in large scale venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Staples Center and Coliseo de Puerto Rico. They also exploded on the internet, with over 100 million Youtube hits, and millions of fans on Facebook and Myspace.

Wisin Y Yandel have continued their success in 2010, receiving another Grammy nomination. Not ones to rest on their laurels, the duo continues to tour and sell out concerts. They also give back to the community, donating a portion of ticket sales to Habitat for Humanity.

Both Wisin and Yandel are married with children, They currently reside in Puerto Rico.
