Let’s look at what we know of Priscilla and Aquila.
They were recorded as living in Rome, Corinth, and Ephesus and later back in Rome. They seem to have had the church meet in their home wherever they lived.
In the year 49 AD, the Roman ruler Claudias ordered all of the Jews out of Rome. Priscilla and her husband Aquila moved from Rome to Corinth. It was in Corinth that they met Paul who was on his 2nd missionary journey. Priscilla and Aquila were tent makers, as was Paul, so Paul worked and stayed with them while he was in Corinth. When Paul moved on to Syria, Priscilla and Aquila went with him as far as Ephesus.
In Ephesus, the two met Apollos, a Jew who was teaching about God. His education was incomplete, for he knew about Jesus but only the repentance taught by John the Baptist. He was still looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. Priscilla and Aquila took Apollos home with them and taught him more adequately about the Christ, sharing the good news. With their help, Apollos went on to become a powerful teacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In the end Priscilla and Aquila were commended for their devotion to the cause. The apostle Paul mentioned them often in his letters to the churches. In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he told of the couple’s courageous efforts, putting their own lives at stake for his welfare. He said that all the Gentile churches were grateful to them.
Ephesians 5:31 says that when a man and woman are married they become ‘one flesh.’ Each loves the other as they love themselves. Neither one attempts to dominate, feels more important or more influential than the other. They are focused on a common goal, whether it is raising godly children, running a family business, serving others or a combination of goals. Priscilla and Aquila were focused on the cause of Christ and were successful in working in perfect harmony for their Lord.
Read about Priscilla and Aquila in Acts 18, 2 Timothy 4, and Romans 16.
