Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is an anime series created by Sunrise, with character designs by CLAMP. The series has won awards at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, the Animage Anime Grand Prix, and at an Animation Kobe event.

The series is set in an alternate universe, which contains three superpowers: the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the European Union. In the series, the Holy Britannian Empire conquered Japan on August 10, 2010 a.t.b., and renamed the country as Area 11. At the start of the series, it is 2017 a.t.b., and mecha robots and weapons are used in addition to regular firearms for combat.

Lelouch is the main character of the series. He is an intelligent student who enjoys using his intelligence to gamble and beat his opponents. After beating a nobleman at a game of chess, Lelouch and his friend are heading back to school. However, they end up getting trapped in the middle of a terrorist plot. Lelouch is driven away in the terrorists' vehicle, which is being pursued by forces of the Holy Britannian Empire. An old friend of Lelouch's has joined the Holy Britannian Empire's armed forces, and this old friend finds Lelouch and the item the terrorists stole. While the armed forces were being told it was poison gas, it turns out to contain a woman.

After a confrontation that makes it seem that Lelouch's old friend has been killed at the hands of the armed forces, and the empire wiping out a slum district, the mysterious woman saves Lelouch from being shot. When it appears that Lelouch will be killed, the mysterious woman grants Lelouch the power of the Geass. He uses his newfound powers to get himself out his predicament.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a series that combines elements from drama, mecha anime, and alternate history timelines. However, Code Geass is not really family viewing material. There's a bit of blood and death that appears in the first episode alone, so it's really not ideal viewing for younger children. Personally, I would recommend Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
