Outlaw Star is set in the distant future, and it's about 150 years after spacecraft have been developed that can travel faster than the speed of light. The main character of the series is Gene Starwind; he is a player, a slacker, and the captain of the Outlaw Star. He has a wide array of weapons, which includes a Caster gun (which is effective against Tao priests and other supernatural beings).
Jim Hawking is Gene's 11-year-old business partner and sidekick. He's a computer expert and an accountant; it's his responsibility to take care of the finances and the plans. They run their small business on a backwater planet called Sentinel 3.
One day, a woman going by the name of Rachell calls and asks for their assistance for acquiring parts and serving as a bodyguard. It turns out that Rachell is an alias, and the woman is actually a space pirate named Hilda. She has other space pirates following her and wanting to get the treasure she has.
Gene and Jim find themselves thrown into a situation they don't fully understand, and are on the run from various entities, including the police and the space pirates. However, through this experience, Gene comes to own the Outlaw Star, which is a technologically advanced space ship.
When Outlaw Star aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in 2001, a lot of editing was done to the series. In fact, episode 23 of the series was never aired on Toonami due to all the nudity and suggestive scenes included in the episode. If you watch the unedited version of the series, there is a lot of hinting at sex and nudity. When it comes to the battle sequences, there is only a minimal amount of blood shown during the fights.
After watching the first episode, I think viewers who are fans of Cowboy Bebop could potentially also end up becoming interested in Outlaw Star. Personally, I would recommend Outlaw Star to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
