Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?

Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? is by Bill Martin Jr. Eric Carle handles the illustrations. It is a beautifully written board and picture book on a world problem, the endangerment of many animal species on our planet.

According to the author, there are more than 5,000 endangered species worldwide. This colorful book brings to the child’s attention ten of these animals.

The rhyming prose tells the animals’ answers to the question, “What do you see?” There is the panda bear who sees a bald eagle. A water buffalo walks the fields and views another animal. A spider monkey puts in an appearance and shares what he sees. Throughout the book, the singsong text is set forth in rhyme. Each animal’s name is repeated twice like the panda bear in the title.

The last two pages contain pictures of the animals along with their name. Children may use the animals to count and/or say the colors. They can go back and locate the animals in the story.

Eric Carle’s familiar illustrations decorate the pages. His distinctive broad brush stokes decorate the background. The animals in the foreground resemble Balinese shadow puppets

The book is a great tool to introduce conservation to youngsters. It is never too early, to introduce infants, toddlers and young children to the conservation of animals and natural resources. A note to the parent and teacher, the future extinction of the animals is not expressed in the text. Therefore conservation does not have to be discussed, if so desired. The book is then a fantastic picture book with talking animals.

Quick Tip! Discuss conservation with your child. Remind him not to litter. Take the child to the zoo, so he can see the animals. This makes the animals a physical part of his world, not an abstract concept in a book.

Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? is a colorful book of animals. The text is almost lyrical. It is great for infants, toddlers and young children. It is available as a board book as well as a picture book.
