I received a lovely birthday gift this week--four coffees from Two for the Pot in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Two for the Pot is a store that sells coffees, teas and accessories. It is certainly not a newcomer to this location or this line of goods. They have been in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn Heights since 1973.
One Yelp.com reviewer describes them as “an oasis amid the rabid coffee bean wars, a calm Switzerland-like enclave of peace far from the Stumptown/Clover/D'Amico madness.” They are listed in the Zagat Guide and also in the Food Lovers’ Guide to Brooklyn by Sherri Eisenberg.
I called Two for the Pot to inquire about a website, or another source for more information and here is what I got. “No, we don’t have a website or a computer. We’ve got 19th century practices and have no plans on joining the 21st anytime soon. We don’t take credit cards either.”
Wow! I really need to go over there because I think I may be able witness ancient history first hand. I have to say that they sound friendly enough and everyone seems to like them, but most of all they seem to know their stuff when it comes to coffee and tea. After close to 40 years in the business, they should.
The coffees I received were:
I am enjoying the Kenya AA right now. Writing about coffee is a great excuse to have another cup. I remember the first and last time I tried a Kenya AA. It was well before the Starbucks’ era in a great coffee shop that was unique for that time, a forerunner of Starbucks in fact. I had no idea of what a French Press was nor did I know anything about specialty coffees. I felt like I had joined a special club. Who knew they were on to something?
The Two for the Pot owner probably did. I'm sure they've seen many things come and go and yet, in spite of their low-tech 19th century ways, they remain focused on what really matters--high quality products, good customer service and prices that keep everyone coming back.
I look forward to trying the other coffees and stopping by Two for the Pot very soon. If you are in the New York area and would like to check them out, please do. If you love coffee like I do, I don’t think we will be disappointed.
