Windows 7 comes with a new feature called Jump Lists which are customizable lists of various items such as files, folders, music and much more. Jump lists not only contain shortcuts to files and programs but can also contain commands such as play a song or compose a new email.
What is displayed on a Jump List varies by program. For example, the Jump List for Internet Explorer will display your most visited website links while the Jump List for Media play displays your most played music.
Open a Jump List:
You can access the Jump List for a program that is running or pinned to the taskbar from the taskbar by right-clicking on the program in the taskbar.
To access a program that has been pinned to the start menu or recently accessed from the Start Menu.
Click Start
Hover over program to open the Jump List
Click the desired item in the Jump List
The jump list will be the same regardless of whether accesses from the taskbar or from the Start Menu.
Managing Jump Lists on the Start Menu:
Unpin an item from a Jump List
Click on Start and open the Jump List for the program
Hover over the item to be added, click on the pushpin and click Pin to this list.
Unpin an item from a Jump List
Click on Start and open the Jump List for the program
Hover over the item to be removed, click on the pushpin and click Unpin to this list.
You can also remove an item from the Jump List from the taskbar. Either way once it is removed the item does not appear regardless of how you access the Jump List going forward (Start Menu or the taskbar).
Additional Tips:
Jump lists on the taskbar contain additional commands that can be used to unpin a program from the task bar or close an opened item.
A shortcut or program can be dragged to the taskbar which pins the item to the Jump List if it is not already on the taskbar.
Items on the Jump List can be moved or copied to other locations such us dragging a document into email as an attachment.
