African Proverbs for Weddings, Marriage, & Love

Proverbs in Africa have been passed down from generation to generation. They are commonly held truths and beliefs rooted in every day experiences. Most proverbs are often told in a metaphorical sense allowing the listener to spin his or her own interpretation.

This eBook contains many African proverbs on love and marriage. Some proverbs are very sweet and romantic while others are tongue in cheek and almost making fun of love and romance.

African Proverbs for Weddings, Marriage, and LoveEach tribe in Africa has its own wedding traditions. Some tribes dig up banana trees and replant them outside the church where the ceremony is taking place for good luck. Other tribes have both a traditional tribal ceremony and a church wedding. Still others simply starting living together and call themselves married.

In African wedding ceremonies family is very important – as it is with all aspects of African culture. A wedding is more than joining two people together. It is the joining of two families, two tribes, and even two cultures in the case of an intercultural marriage.

In the tradition of the Woyo tribe of The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the new bride is given a set of carved pot covers by her mother. Each pot cover has a different proverb carved upon it. When the bride is unhappy with her husband, she will serve him dinner in a bowl covered with a pot cover that has the appropriate proverb on it. She may even choose to make her complaint public by serving her husband with a pot cover when he brings his friends home for dinner.

The proverbs in this book are presented in no specific order. Feel free to use these proverbs for wedding invitations, wedding programs, Valentine’s Day cards and other romantic endeavors.

From time to time this eBook will be updated with additional African proverbs about love and marriage. Remember you can download future additions of this eBook at no extra charge.
