Who doesnít want to smell good? The fact that the global perfume industry is worth billions today shows how we love to spray on fragrances. Unfortunately, the majority of commercially-produced perfumes are made from harmful chemical products that come from petroleum, also known as petrochemicals.
So while synthetic perfumes smell absolutely wonderful, these products are really toxic concoctions that are harmful to human health and the environment.
The good thing is you donít have to give up perfumes entirely. With the abundance of fragrant scents in nature, why not learn how to make natural perfume? Besides, perfumes were made purely with natural ingredients way before perfume makers started mixing it with synthetics back in the later part of the 18th century.
Going back to this tradition of making organic perfumes is not only an environmentally-friendly alternative to using chemically-laden fragrances but it is also known to provide healing properties. Natural perfumes come from plants and flowers whose essential oils give off beautiful scents and can also heal your mind and body.
For those of you just learning how to make perfume in your own homes, here is a very simple recipe that you can try: Add 4 to 8 drops of your favourite essential oil to 2 Ĺ oz of vodka or any pure grain alcohol. Stir the mixture slowly until the oil is fully incorporated. Let the perfume mixture sit for a couple of days. Afterwards, slowly stir in 2 tablespoons of distilled water. Once again, let the mixture sit for another 2 days or longer if you want a stronger scent.
Store your perfume creation in a small glass bottle, making sure to use dark and not clear glass to protect the scent from sunlight and make it last longer. You can find essential oils in most health food stores and craft stores. You can certainly blend more than one essential oil.
In fact, scented oils have three different notes and itís by combining 3 oils that you can create a unique scent.
Making your own perfume involves some experimentation and that is actually the fun part of it. Experiment with different essential oils and the number of drops to add in the mix. You will need to keep a record of the scents you make and exactly whatís in the mix so you can reproduce your scents easily.
If you donít get your desired scent right away, just keep experimenting. Look for tested natural perfume recipes online.
I can wait to hear from you, let me know how wonderful your creations turned out.
