This time out, I have the latest from Kresley Cole’s ‘Immortals After Dark’ series, Demon from the Dark (Pocket, purchased). In this newest installment in the popular series, witch Carrow Graie has been captured by a shadowy group of humans known as the Order, and soon after, she finds that the young daughter of her cousin is also in their hands, and her only hope of freeing herself and the young witch is to agree to their demands that she lure a vemon, half-vampire, half-demon from his lair on a hellish plane of existence so they can capture him as well. Malkom Slaine is ferocious, refusing to acknowledge his vampire half, as it was forced on him by a vicious being years ago. But when Carrow arrives in his world, he discovers she is his mate. That means nothing to a witch, but it doesn’t mean that Malkom will give her up. They cannot communicate very well, as she doesn’t speak Demonish, and he forgot her language a long time ago. But the scorching attraction they share helps the communication process along very nicely. Carrow realizes early on that her assignment won’t be nearly as easy as she’d expected, and by the time she has to betray his trust, she wishes she didn’t have to. Clearly, this pair has a rough road to travel before they’re going to have a happy ending. Malkom is probably the ultimate in tortured heroes, and he is absolutely irresistible. Strong, sexy, lonely, and determined to protect his mate, no matter what. Carrow I found harder to like, which surprised me, as I’ve loved nearly all of Ms. Cole’s heroines thus far. Falling in love with Malkom was a piece of cake, but even by the end of this one, I didn’t much care for Carrow. I did enjoy the story, but I can’t say it’s replaced my favorite so far in the series, Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night, or even my second favorite. I’m going to borrow three and a half of Cupid’s five arrows for this one. I’d happily give Malkom all five on his own, however. I still can’t wait to see what Ms. Cole has in store for us next in this terrific series.
