Some New Sedums

Gardeners can never have too many stonecrops or sedums. These wonderful hardy succulent perennials are very popular. There are a large number of newer varieties available. Look for these at garden centers, nurseries, and the other usual sources.

Elsie’s Gold Sedum
This clump shaped, compact hardy perennial is quite hardy—to zone three. Elsie’s Gold is a sport of Herbstfreude Sedum. It has lovely variegated foliage The greenish-silver leaves are touched with light yellow along the edges. As the growing season progresses, the yellow fades to cream once fall begins to arrive. The large leaves are toothed.
Elsie’s Gold is particularly floriferous, and blooms throughout the summer into fall. The blossoms open as a soft pink, and deepen to magenta over time.

Moonlight Serenade Sedum
This is a type of Autumn Joy stonecrop. Hardy to zone three, this can be up to 1˝ feet tall. It has an upright to clumping, compact growth habit. When it first emerges, the foliage is greenish-blue. Over time, this deeps to purple.
A very floriferous variety, Moonlight Serenade has lovely deep pink buds. The flowers are golden or creamy white. The seed heads, which are reddish-brown, provide additional color as well.

Plum Perfection Sedum
This lovely hardy perennial is a low growing plant less than a foot in height. It has a clumping growth habit with a slightly wider spread. Plum Perfection is noted for its bright red stems.
When the new leaves first emerge, they’re greenish-gray. Over time, they begin turning plum. This is a late blooming variety with the bicolored pink blossoms opening from late August onwards.

Silver Stone Sedum
This new variety of rock stonecrop makes a suitable ground cover. Hardy to zone four, Silverstone is only six inches or so in height.
The stems are upright and have very attractive, needle-like foliage. Though the foliage is initially greenish-blue, this becomes flushed with purplish-pink as the fall becomes cooler. Silverstone has lovely star-shaped, yellow blossoms.
