Adobe InDesign CS5 Interactive Documents

The InDesignR PDF is much more than it was a few years ago. No longer is it a static format but it now can contain rich media including FlashR interactive elements and video. Adding these new tasks to your InDesign skill set can take some time. This video training DVD by Chris Converse can get you up to speed.

The DVD contains over three hours of training along with the supporting exercise files and a small reference guide. When finished, you will have learned how to start with PhotoshopR and IllustratorR files and create a multimedia PDF with global navigation, animations and video with navigation points. The sample project is a four-sectioned multimedia advertisement for a movie. The project's features includes a movie trailer that plays within the PDF or SWF document, a multistate object with several photos and an interactive map with external links for ordering tickets to the premiere. It's difficult to believe that you can create such a document without any coding and just the InDesign panel features.

The training video starts with some InDesign basics including how to use styles to generate a table of contents and bookmarks and how to export your project as PDF or SWF. Next, you create buttons and assign actions to build the global navigation for the document. Of course, you will learn to build rollover states for the buttons and page transitions. The video section of the project contains an inline f4v file and navigation points for moving to specific areas within the video. The project also includes an interactive map with hyperlinked overlays assigned to the map buttons. All of these features are exported with both the finished PDF and SWF versions. Also, for the SWF version you will include a page curl/flip feature.

The InDesign reference guide covers frequently used information such as how to create character, paragraph, object and nested styles. It also covers tasks related to multimedia documents including interactive elements, navigation, animations and video.

This training video was written, designed and hosted by Chris Converse. Chris is a graphic designer, multimedia developer and co-founder of Codify Design Studio.
