Award Winning Marigolds for Cut Flowers

When it comes time to choose flowers for your cutting garden, the award winning marigolds deserve attention. They are easy to grow, and provide lots of stems for cutting. The following varieties are recommended.


Marigold Babuda Series

The Babuda series is new. These performed very well during cut flower trials in 2010. Suitable for all climates, these bloom throughout the season. The tall, sturdy stems are perfect for cutting. They feature firm blooms with a long vase life.


Marigold Bali Gold

Bali Gold was a winner at the Ohio State University plant trials. These plants are semi-tall. They do especially well in warm climates, and produce lots of stems for cutting. The sturdy stems donít bend during heavy rains. The strong plants are well branched.


Marigold Discovery Series

The Discovery Yellow received a perfect rating of 5 at the Michigan State University plant trials in East Lansing. Over a foot in height, these disease resistant plants are free flowering. They bloom non-stop throughout the summer. They have completely double blossoms that are 2Ĺ inches wide. The flowers have a nice shape. The plants can begin blooming about three months from the time the seeds are planted.

Discovery Orange is very deep orange. Discovery Yellow is a vivid shade.


Marigold Narai Series

Two of these varieties were winners at the Ohio State University trials. They also performed well during the cut flower trials in 2010. Narai Yellow, a semi-tall plant, did exceptionally well. The Narai Yellow is semi-tall.

The American series of marigolds were also top performers at the Bear Creek Farms cut flower trials in Oklahoma, located in zone six. The blooms are tight, and fully double. They shed the rain.


Marigold Moonsong Deep Orange

This vigorous plant was named a 2011 All America Selections winner. It is noted for its fully double, intensely colored blossoms with tightly packed petals. Up to 3Ĺ inches wide, these blooms open on sturdy, strong stems. These flowers easily shed rain and arenít damaged by storms. The plants branch from the base and tolerate drought. These are over 1ľ feet in height with a matching spread. Moonsong Deep Orange begins flowering about 2Ĺ months from the time the seeds are planted.

This variety is small enough to grow in containers. It is sensitive to the day length so that it blooms more quickly under short days. Moonsong Deep Orange plants are resistant to drought, and are quite tolerant of heat.
