Green Holiday Greetings

Everyone loves to receive Christmas cards, and spread holiday cheer. But honestly, cards can get a bit costly, especially with postage, and unless you write a personal message in each one, they really arenít a very personal way to connect with someone.

More and more people are now using social mediums, such as Facebook and Twitter, to stay connected. Here are my ideas for spreading holiday cheer this year, via email, Twitter, Facebook {or Myspace} and saving a tree or two while helping you to reconnect with old friends and family members.

Share a Favorite Holiday Memory
What are some of your favorite holiday memories? Type one up and share it in a Facebook email with those who may also remember. Whatís nice about sharing in Facebook email is that you can email to a bunch of people, and get them involved in conversation without having to remember to hit the ďreply allĒ button in your regular email account.

Most of us, no matter how difficult our family can be, will have at least a couple of favorite Christmas memories to share. Sharing the good memories can help to release some of the energy stored in the more painful memories, and draw the family closer together during this time of year, even if everyone is separated by many miles.

You could also do this with work friends and friends from school. Share a memory from a work holiday party, or some favorite time spent with an old friend.

Share Your Favorite Christmas Carols
I recently sent a Facebook message to my family members talking about my favorite Christmas carol from childhood, and I included a link to the song from YouTube so they could actually listen to it. I then asked them to share their favorite childhood Christmas carol with me, along with the story of why it was their favorite.

Try posting a link on Twitter or Facebook to a favorite Christmas carol once a week, and see who comments!

Friendship Songs
Think of your very best friend in the world, and how he or she makes you feel. Pick a song just for them! Post the link to their Facebook page. I got this idea recently when a dear friend of mine passed away. I sang a song at his memorial, and then thought ďwhy didnít I sing this to him while he was still here?!!Ē

Create a Playlist
Create a playlist for a special friend or loved one thatís filled with your favorite songs that remind you of them! This is not a new idea Ė before computers we used to do this on cassette tapes! Now with mp3s, it is so much easier, and so much less time consuming, to share music with friends and loved ones..

Send a Musical Christmas Card
Yes folks, I got this idea from my favorite crooner, Bing Crosby! Record yourself, your kids, or the whole family, singing a favorite Christmas Carol, upload it to YouTube, and send the link to all your friends and family. You donít have to sound like Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. Itís the love you put into it that will make it so precious to those who receive it.

Donít let yourself get caught up in believing that because itís technology, it canít be loving or personal. No matter how we share ourselves over the holidays, whether itís through the traditional medium of greetings cards, through Facebook or YouTube, or even both, whatís important is that we remember that life is more precious because of the loved ones who share it with us.

Hereís my musical greeting card to you! Know that I wish you and yours the very best this holiday season.
