The Single Life

Despite its negative reputation, ďsingleĒ doesnít have to be a dirty word. The single life does have its benefits and if handled properly, is likely to lead toward the development of a very healthy and satisfying romantic future. Whether single by choice or by circumstance, it is up to you to stop worrying about the cards that you were dealt and start focusing on how to play the best possible hand with what youíve got.

The secret to living happily single is all in the attitude! Embrace the single life and seize the opportunity to reflect on past experiences, to identify unhealthy patterns, and to work on some self-improvement projects. Recognize that happiness does not come from anyplace else but within and that a partner is not meant to provide happiness but rather to enhance it.

The single life provides an opportunity to establish a strong sense of independence, which is an important part of preparing for future relationships. Co-dependency is far too common in the dating scene today and tends to detract from the inherent value of romantic ties. Loving someone is a beautiful thing but needing someone can easily become tragic.

Of course the single life also has its fair share of disadvantages, some of which include the potential for loneliness and social stigma. Loneliness is one of the most common complaints among singles but itís nothing that a little quality companionship canít cure. Society often has a knack for making people feel inferior, a talent that is especially pronounced around the holiday season when many singles tend to feel particularly lonely. The greatest social stigma to which singles are subjected, however, is undeniably the annual sucker punch called Valentineís Day. Even those singles that are totally comfortable with their single status usually canít help but cringe at the vomit-inducing, overly commercialized interpretation of romance that seems to run rampant on that day.

If you want to make the most of your single life, combat loneliness by spending some time reconnecting with friends or making new ones. You can also take advantage of your extra time by reflecting on your past dating experiences in order to learn from your mistakes. It is also a good idea to experiment with new hobbies and interests.

Ultimately, the single life is all about learning to love the person that you are. Eventually, you will need to decide whether to keep that love to yourself or share it with a partner who complements you beautifully and has just as much love to give in return. In the meantime, however, just lean back and enjoy the ride!
