Award Winning Roses for the Mountain States

For several years the All-America Rose Selections has recognized roses that are outstanding in certain regions of the country. Suited to local growing conditions, several varieties are adapted to the cold and arid mountain states. The winners include Whisper, Knock Out, and Scentimental, and are all great cut flowers.

Scentimental Rose

Easy to grow, these flowers look their best when the temperatures are moderate. A repeat bloomer, this is a vigorous, floribunda with sensational striped blooms.

With a delicious rich spicy scent, these lovely red blended flowers are completely double and very large. Reaching six inches in diameter, these have 30 petals or so. They’re cup shaped. The petals are a swirl of red and white stripes with no two flowers being identical. It is free flowering throughout the season. The flowers are highly recommended for potpourri. The blooms open in clusters, and last a very long time.

This is available as a regular bush and as a tree rose. Suited to zones five through 11, this was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1997 when it was released. This was hybridized by rose breeder Tom Carruth.

Reaching about four feet in height with a spread of three feet, this has deep green, healthy foliage. This vigorous plant is a rounded bush. The leaves are textured, and remain clean because they’re disease resistant. The parents were Peppermint Twist and Playboy.

Whisper Rose

This was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 2003. A vigorous, medium to tall plant, this was introduced in 2003 in the UK by Dickson. Suited to zones five through 11, this can reach six feet in height with a spread of three feet. This disease resistant variety has clean, shiny foliage. Whisper is suited to the mountain states because the thick, sturdy leaves can withstand drying winds.

A repeat bloomer, it blooms all season. This has beautifully shaped flowers with lovely ivory to whitish-yellow petals. Very fragrant, these are wonderfully double, and have a tightly clustered center. Blooming all season, these are white in bud. The stems have a long vase life.
