Rock walls offer other sites for growing cacti and succulents. Do the planting only after you have all of your rocks in place. Following that, it is time to prepare a stone or gravel mulch.

Many Japanese gravel gardens are a special type of rock garden. Though cacti and succulents arenít the traditional choice for Japanese gardens, there is no reason these canít be used so long as they adhere to the basic aesthetic values of the Japanese garden style. For a special Japanese rock garden create one with gravel that mimics the look of a dry stream bed. In this style of garden, various kinds of stones and gravel are arranged so they duplicate what you would see in nature. This technique could also be used to create canyon gardens in California and similar climates.

Stepping Stones with Succulents

Low growing and spreading varieties of succulents are ideal for planting between stepping stones. In some cases, a few of the stones or blocks are left out to allow extra space for growing larger plants. Generally low growing species of succulents are preferred for stepping stones. Sedums with spreading stems are also very suitable as they cover the stones. For stepping stone plantings, you canít go wrong with the Steppables brand of plants. Under a foot tall, these are low growing plants that are suitable for such ground cover plantings.

A Minimalist Garden with Cacti and Succulents

This is one type of garden design style where cacti and succulents are the ideal choice. This simple and contemporary design is perfect for those with limited garden space.
