Gabriella loved her grandmother very, very much. Visits with her included singing songs, reading stories, playing hide and seek, and eating special snacks. The grandmother loved Gabriella so much that she made her a special red, hooded cloak. Gabriella always wore it, so everyone called her Little Red Riding Hood or Little Red.

They lived on opposite sides of the forest, so Little Red was always sure to stay out of the woods because of the wild animals that lived there and the hunters who hunted them.

On this trip to take her grandmother some food, Little Red decided that the trip to her grandma's house would be much shorter if she went through the woods. After all, she was wearing a red cloak. There was no way a hunter could mistake her for a wild animal. Little Red, distracted by the cute little woodland creatures that came to beg food from her, lost track of the time. Then she heard the sounds of a hunter chasing an animal. Startled, she takes off running and falls down, only to be run over by the animal being chased. When she looks up, all she can see is a gray, bushy tail disappearing into the woods.

Little Red rushes straight to her grandma’s house. Her grandmother cannot be found anywhere. Instead, Gabriella finds a great gray wolf trembling with fright. He begs and pleads with the little girl not to give him up to the hunter knocking on the door of the cottage. Not able to find a good hiding place for the wolf she is determined to save, Gabriella dresses him up in her grandmother’s clothes and tucks him in bed. So the wolf is able to get back to his home in the woods safely, Little Red dresses him in her red cloak and hood.

The wolf is able to return the favor to Little Red for saving him, but I won’t divulge how that happens. Neither will I let you know how the story ends. This is a humorous and engaging version of Little Red Riding Hood, one that I highly recommend reading.

For young readers, various words throughout the book are underlined. These words many not be familiar to those just beginning to read. At the end of the book, a small illustrated dictionary explains what these words mean.
