That's right. Mothers are the holiday gifts that keeps on giving and giving and giving – all year long. So it's especially important that you take good care of yourself during the holidays. Don't go overboard giving gifts to others. Give to yourself by putting your own well being first.
"But," you may ask, "Wouldn't that be selfish?" Not really. It’s kind of like the safety guidelines they give you on the airplane just before your flight takes off. Be sure to put on your own oxygen mask first, before you think about helping your loved ones.
Don't Sacrifice Yourself Giving to Others
Recently a friend of mine with five children died suddenly at the young age of 43. She had been feeling tired all the time for nearly a year, but always put her family first. For example, she made sure her kids took vitamins, but didn't want to spend money on supplements for herself.
And would you believe it, after she died not one of her children – the three oldest were 13, 16 and 19 – even knew how to turn on the washing machine or boil water on the stove.
My friend was a giver to the extreme and just couldn't say "no" to the people she cared about. She gave of herself until she broke down. And now her kids are without a mother.
We all have people in our lives that we particularly care about. And during the holidays we feel it's our job to make everyone happy. At this special time you probably want to give your loved ones a special gift. That's good. Just make sure you put yourself first.
Why? Because the most valuable gift you can give to those important to you is your own health and happiness. That's the only way you'll be able to share the best of YOU.
Put Your Own Well Being First
Women tend to be caregivers and often take it to the extreme. In the process of caring for others, we can easily neglect our own needs and desires. It happens all the time. But, that’s really the worst thing you can do for all the people you care about.
Don't fall prey to holiday stress. Right now is the perfect time to start putting yourself first, even if your only reason for doing it is for the good of all the people important to you.
Take the time and money to:
- Eat right and take your vitamins
- Rest, relax and breathe deeply
- Get enough healthy exercise
- Maintain a positive frame of mind
- And feel really good and happy
