Four Syllable Girl Names

Looking for a dramatic name for your baby girl? Something a bit more formal and elegant than the typical girl name? If so, a four-syllable name might be the perfect fit.

One of the pros of a 4-syllable girl name is that it'll come with plenty of nicknaming options. Long names give you a lot to work with. Another pro is that long names can balance out short middle names and surnames.

On the con side, long names can be a bit cumbersome to write out. There's also the possibility that someone who goes by a nickname (i.e. Liz instead of Elizabeth) might grow to dislike her long (and somewhat unfamiliar) real name.

Currently, nine of the 100 most popular girl names in the United States are 4-syllable names. Two of those nine are in the top 10 (!). The nine names are:

Four-syllable names that are used less often nowadays for baby girls include Adelina, Alexandrine, Bernardetta, Celestina, Christabella, Cornelia, Donatella, Eleanora, Ferdinanda, Galilea, Henrietta, Josephina, Marylouise, Michelangela, Philomena and Wilhelmina.

(The only five-syllable name on the top 1,000 right now seems to be Alexandria, at 200th.)
