In Stockholm, Sweden, thousands of waxwings are gorging on fermenting berries ... and crashing into nearby windows!
The rowanberries are found at Karlstad University, and the waxwings are eating the berries after they naturally ferment in the sun. Drunk, they then crash into nearby windows, where some of them die. No windows have been broken so far, and school officials note that the berries are almost all gone, so the waxwings will end their drunken flying soon.
Drunken birds have their own special place in history. Buddhist doctrine tells how a forester found fruit from the Jatakas tree, which had ripened and fermented. He saw a flock of birds that had gotten drunk from the liquid, and thus brought the knowledge of alcohol to the world!
