Old Forge - Gateway to the Adirondacks

There's a festive atmosphere to Old Forge, NY in the summer. Downtown is busy with people sunning themselves on the beach, browsing through the small shops, or just strolling down Main Street. Located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, there's plenty to do in this resort town, including shopping, and there's plenty to shop for.

A number of small shops and specialty stores line Old Forge's Main Street. Just a few of the items to be found here include custom-made T-shirts, glass works, and furniture. Arts and crafts are adequately represented as well.

There's more to do in this community than just shop, though. When it comes to outdoor sports, this is the place to boat, swim, bike, and canoe. Its location at the base of the chain of Fulton Lakes assures visitors access to watersports. A public beach is located within the town, complete with diving dock and sandy shore. Boat rentals are available at Rivett's Marine, online at Rivett's Marine. The truly adventurous may want to try whitewater rafting with Adirondack River Outfitters Adirondack River Outfitters or Whitewater Challengers .

For a leisurely paddle down the Moose River, canoes can be rented at Tickner's Canoe Trips (see Related Links). An alternative to canoeing both ways is to pull out six miles downstream to catch a ride back on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

The railroad, which operates out of Thendara, offers several different scenic excursions through the Adirondack woodlands. A Bike and Rail trip is also available; bikers are dropped off at Carter Station, to explore the some 100 miles of trails within the township. Bicycle rentals are also available.
