Young patrons need to know the importance of bicycle safety. This program provides a lesson for six to eight year olds and accompanying books.

Bicycle Safety
Riding bicycle is a lot of fun. Just like when you ride in a car, play sports, or go swimming you need to follow rules in order to be safe. What are some of the rules to riding your bike safely?

• Always wear a helmet.
  Whenever you ride your bike you need to wear your helmet. If you fall over and hit your head the helmet protects your head. You can be a great bike rider and still have an accident. If your tire hits a rock you can loose your balance and fall. A helmet should fit snug and level on your head. The chin strap should be snug under your chin and the front of the helmet should not be more that one inch above your eyebrows.
• Always obey the traffic lights and signs.
  You need to obey the same rules that cars do. When you come to a stop sign you need to stop. Look all ways and if your parents let you cross that street only go when the street is safe. You should do this even if your parents are walking or riding by your side. Cars may not be looking out for a bicycle. You need to always look and be safe.
• Do not ride your bike after dark.
  If you must ride your bike at night wear light colored clothes and make sure your bike has reflectors and a headlight. You should also have an adult with you if you ride at night.
• Keep your bike in good working order.
  Just like cars need to be taken cars of your bike needs to be taken care of too. Check the tires to make sure they have air. Have an adult help you check the tires and the chain. A loose chain or flat tires could cause you to have an accident.
