Long Island has many of the most beautiful stretches of beach anywhere in the country. There are dozens of public beaches around the island, each of which has its own special flavor. Here are some of the most interesting beaches.
Fire Island National Seashore - On Fire Island, which is technically a barrier island adjacent to Long Island, this national park has forests for hiking, a lighthouse to explore, a few different visitor's centers where you can learn the history of whalers and pirates in the area, and two separate beaches for public swimming. Watch Hill and Sailor's Haven are the two beaches where lifeguards are on duty in the summertime. This is a great beach and park to visit if you want multiple activities, and not just swimming.
Heckscher State Park - In the town of Islip, in Suffolk County, Long Island, this State Park is a great place for family fun. With three large stretches of beach, plus facilities for picnicking, playgrounds, and even a concert series, it's also pet-friendly.
Meschutt Beach County Park - Also in Suffolk County, the Meschutt Beach Park is primarily for swimming, surfing, and boating. It's a great stretch of beach for sunbathing, and it tends to be popular among young single adults, but if you're looking for someplace that offers a lot of kids' activities, it may not be the beach for you.
East Hampton Main Beach - East Hampton is an idyllic small town with a wonderful old-fashioned feeling. It is a favorite vacation spot for celebrities and the New York City glitterati, but the Main Beach is still free for swimming and sunbathing. You might even spot someone famous!
