Making Money with your Computer at Home - Book Review

Paul and Sarah Edwards have been writing books on self-employment for many years now. These “self-employment lifestyle experts” have given us new computer-based business information with Making money with your computer at Home. This book consists of three parts. Part I contains 101 computer home business profiles. In Part II, the couple addresses 47 Questions you need to answer to start making money with your computer and Part III covers the essentials of using your computer in business.

The Edwards profile a wide variety of possible home-based computer businesses and/or jobs. (Most of these profiles are for independent contractor or home businesses, but it is possible to work from home as an employee for some of these positions.) The profiles include desktop video, medical billing, webmaster, virtual assistant, proofreading, public relations, drafting, event planning and more. Each profile includes keys to let you know the business-type category (words, numbers, graphics, etc.), the income potential, and the location of the work (all at home or mostly elsewhere) and any special characteristics such as high income potential, recession resistant, low start-up costs and others. Then, a description of the business is provided, followed by resources such as books, websites or organizations for further reference.

Part II includes a very valuable guide to finding out if working from home is for you and how to create a business and find clients, calculate your startup costs, and much more. This guide has information for everything from naming to banking. It’s almost like having a separate “how-to” book focused on computer-related businesses.

Part III covers the computer stuff, beginning with explanations of the basics of the machine. Subsections include money-management, administrative tasks and organization, marketing with technology, and online selling and buying. Then, there is an appendix with helpful websites and agencies.

I have long been a fan of the Edwards. Their writing is realistic but motivating, and very thorough. This book is no exception. If you are looking to leave your job behind and work from home, the computer-based ideas in this book are a great starting point. You can explore 101 different ideas, which is a lot of information. Plus, you can read the how-to’s based on the Edwards many years of writing on self-employment. While you will probably need some supplemental information to get your business running, this book will cover most of what is necessary. It can be your road map for getting started.
