My ‘Call Waiting’ Feature Can’t Be Disabled

Call waiting can be a very annoying call feature especially when you are dedicated to accomplishing the purposes of another call – the call you are currently engaged in, successful at, and determined to finish. However, the intermittent beeps interrupt your concentration in an attempt to redirect your attention to the connection on the other line. Although you may not answer, some callers are extremely persistent and continue to call until you do answer. God is this caller and when God calls, you had better answer.

God's call comes at different times in life, and it comes in different ways to each individual. It causes us to do things that the world, and sometimes our families, will say is absolutely insane. Like abandoning a potential career in chemistry for Bible College; or leaving the country to serve orphans in Liberia; or moving into a drug infested neighborhood to reach at-risk youth for Christ. Sometimes God calls us to do things that make no sense at all, yet it fulfills us in a way that no other personal ambition or passion ever has. Even in the midst of adversity, lack of resources, persecution, and/or rejection, He sustains us through it all.

Answering God’s call to fulfill His purpose for your life is a bold and courageous move. To do so makes a statement that you are ready to surrender your goals, plans, talents, and income potential over to Him. “Jesus had a clear understanding of the purpose of his life, and he derived his purpose from his Father and not his own ambitions or aspirations. The hallmark of his life was to learn his Father’s will and walk in the power of the Spirit to bring it to fruition” (Kenneth Boa, “Conformed to His Image”). Just like Jesus our purpose, no matter how God manifests it in our lives, is to “glorify the Father by seeking, serving, and saving the lost” by introducing them to a relationship with Jesus Christ (Kenneth Boa).

“For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts” (1 Thessalonians 2:4 NLT). That is why it is so important that we not depress the switch hook and alternate between calling parties. God wants us to spend time with Him so He can clarify our purpose and refine our hearts. Not to mention, because of who He is He demands our full attention to discipline and training (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). Simply deactivate the first call and willingly accept the Call on the other line.
