Hope Fields takes us on a journey in her new book about a domestic violence relationship. From the back cover:
“The effects of domestic violence are similar to walking through a raging storm. For the victim of domestic violence, the storm rages within them as they go about their daily lives; few are aware of the storm they are facing.”
This statement rings so true for all of us who have been through this. This story is about a couple named Shenique and Ainsley. Their story starts out just like every couple: meet, fall in love, get married. But soon after the wedding is when trouble begins to brew. The abuse starts slow and worsens with a pregnancy. Shenique holds traditional Christian values of being a submissive wife. She struggles with this belief because of the things her husband puts her and their children through. The reader can really feel her inner struggle with her religious beliefs and her heart. Shenique even does what anyone would do and turn to church leaders for help and guidance only to be told she has to obey her husband.
I enjoyed this book because it made me feel like I could truly identify with Shenique and her daily struggle of what to do. Some things that happen, Hope leaves vague but you can still imagine the pain that is felt. The end of the book threw me off at first. I had to read it again to comprehend what was going on but it was a beautifully written description of how Shenique and her babies began their healing process after they got away from Ainsley. Hope writes from her heart in a simple easy to read fashion that makes you want to read to the end.
I recommend anyone who is or has gone through a domestic violence relationship to read Hope’s book. You will feel like you are not the only one in the world who has gone through this and this book may give you some encouragement to get out. Hope is always available to talk as well. I have had many great conversations with her. She has a beautiful and gentle spirit. Please visit her website at http://hopefields.com/
